NASA reports that early results from its PUNCH mission improve near-Earth solar storm forecasting. In a first proof-of-concept test, scientists use continuous imagery from PUNCH—an instrument designed to observe the corona and inner heliosphere—to predict when a solar eruption will reach Earth. According to NASA and Phys.org, the team’s method estimates the near-Earth arrival time of an eruption to within about 30 minutes. The work is presented at the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) Scientific Meeting, and the findings are under review for publication in the journal Space Weather.
