British Gas has agreed a compensation package for customers affected by prepayment meter failures, following findings by the UK energy regulator Ofgem. Under the deal, the company will pay a penalty and provide customer support for people who had prepayment meters forced or fitted in ways that should not have happened, particularly during 2018 to 2021. Reports say the agreement includes around £20m in a payout/penalty element and additional support for affected customers. Sources also state that British Gas will write off energy debt for vulnerable customers, with figures reported as up to £70m, which would reduce outstanding bills linked to the matter. Another account describes the overall redress as potentially reaching up to £112m, combining the cash penalty, a support package, and debt write-offs. The regulator’s investigation is described as one of the most complex in its history, and it relates to meters being installed in homes of customers who were not keeping up with their bills at the height of the Russian gas crisis. The agreements are designed to provide both direct compensation and debt relief to customers impacted by the issue.
