Maharashtra issues a one-year statewide ban on “analogue” and unstandardised paneer products, citing food safety concerns and consumer deception. The order prohibits the manufacture, distribution and retail sale of the non-dairy paneer across the state. It also requires food service establishments to comply: hotels, restaurants, caterers and other food businesses must not use or serve the banned products.
Multiple outlets report that the government frames the measure as enforcement of food safety norms and standards, targeting paneer that does not meet prescribed requirements. Enforcement actions include penalties for violations under the Food Safety Act. NDTV adds that enforcement can involve immediate seizure of stock and destruction of the prohibited items. The Hindu reports that penalties can be severe, including life imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹10 lakh, depending on the offence and related provisions.
The ban remains in effect for one year, with food businesses expected to adjust procurement, preparation and sales practices to comply with the statewide directive.
