South Korea announces it will restart a stalled rail project that could, in the future, link the South’s rail network with North Korea. The project is associated with a planned connection to North Korea’s eastern city of Wonsan. According to South Korea’s Unification Ministry, work will resume on a specific railway section as Seoul looks for new channels for dialogue and cooperation with Pyongyang.
The rail project has been delayed for years. The Kathmandu Post reports it was suspended in 2016 amid rising tensions tied to North Korea’s nuclear programme. Daily Maverick adds that the project has been halted for about a decade and that its revival is occurring despite continued frozen relations between the two Koreas.
The announced restart focuses on bringing forward the South-side portion of the work, rather than immediate cross-border rail operations. Both outlets frame the decision as part of a broader effort by Seoul to create or preserve engagement opportunities, even as security tensions between the Koreas remain unresolved.
