Sonam Wangchuk urges Jharkhand student striker Devendra Nath Mahato to drink water

Heeding Sonam Wangchuk’s request, student leader Devendra Nath Mahato had water on the fourth day of his fast

The veteran educationist and activist, who himself was on a hunger strike for 26 days, asked Mahato to drink water as it otherwise will be 'tantamount to suicide'.

Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto is leading an indefinite hunger strike in Ranchi. He demands transparency in Jharkhand's recruitment examinations and an end to alleged irregularities. Activist Sonam Wangchuk offered support, encouraging Mahto to continue his protest. Protesters are calling for a CBI probe into the alleged recruitment scam. The Chief Minister assured that action would be taken after the investigation concludes.

After four days without food or water, Jharkhand student leader Devendra Nath Mahto drank water following an appeal from climate activist Sonam Wangchuk but said his indefinite fast over alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations would continue.

Ranchi: Student leader and Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) leader Devendra Nath Mahato, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike over irregularities in the JPSC, JSSC CGL and other competitive examinations, drank water on Wednesday after activist Sonam Wangchuk's appeal to him during a video call. Mahato is among the six protesters who have launched an indefinite hunger strike. He started his fast on Sunday night, August 2, 2026.During the call, Wangchuk expressed solidarity with the protesting students and urged the 33-year-old leader to at least consume water while continuing his fight for the students’ demands.“I will break my hunger strike only when you come to meet us.
