Dutch architecture studio MVRDV has released its design plans for the Bihailou Art Village, a cultural and commercial development in Shenzhen, China. The project is currently under construction in the Shatoujiao neighbourhood near the Hong Kong border. Covering about 6,500 square metres, the complex is conceived as a vertical, stacked arrangement of colourful volumes based on MVRDV’s “Vertical Village” idea. The design aims to allow multiple venues to operate independently while still sharing publicly accessible circulation throughout the site. The programme includes a museum and a double-height theatre, alongside cultural and retail spaces. The concept also seeks to reinterpret the scale and spatial character of the surrounding urban fabric through a collection of distinct, stacked units. Architectural coverage describes the development as a mixed-use cultural centre that combines public-facing cultural facilities with commercial functions within one integrated structure.
