Air India appoints Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director following the resignation of Campbell Wilson. The move follows a leadership transition after Wilson had guided the Tata Group-owned airline through an earlier phase of stabilisation, integration and fleet-related commitments. Air India says it selects Gebremariam after a global search conducted by a dedicated board committee that evaluated candidates both inside and outside the airline.
Gebremariam previously led the Ethiopian Airlines Group for more than a decade, a period during which the company expanded its fleet and international network and grew to become one of Africa’s largest and most profitable airline groups, according to multiple reports. Air India and its chairman N. Chandrasekaran describe his experience as relevant to improving operational reliability, safety and profitability as the airline moves from turnaround efforts into faster growth.
While outlets report the appointment and leadership expectations, they do not agree on financial details: Air India and the Tata Group have not publicly disclosed Gebremariam’s remuneration package, including fixed pay, bonuses or long-term incentives. One report notes the latest disclosed benchmark relates to Wilson’s approved compensation, but that does not indicate what the new CEO will earn.
