Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) says it is introducing stricter drug screening for pilots across its airlines after the arrest of a Malaysia Airlines pilot in Indonesia. MAG announced that it has ordered mandatory drug testing and will conduct enhanced checks for all active pilots “beyond industry practice,” following the case last month.
According to reports, the unnamed pilot, 39, was detained on July 28 after Indonesian authorities found 26kg of MDMA (an illegal stimulant) in his luggage when he arrived in Jakarta from Kuala Lumpur. Further urine testing reportedly indicated the pilot had used the drug. MAG did not identify the pilot publicly, but said the policy changes are intended to strengthen compliance and aviation safety controls.
The outlets agree that MAG’s response includes drug tests for all active pilots, rather than only targeted screening, and that the decision follows the investigation and detention connected to the alleged trafficking incident in Indonesia.
