SK hynix says it will invest a total of about 54.3 trillion won (around $38.3 billion) to build two new semiconductor fabrication plants—Y2 in Yongin and M17 in Cheongju—aimed at expanding capacity for AI memory demand. The company’s board approved the plan after citing rapid growth in demand for AI memory chips. Under the investment, SK hynix plans to put 35.2 trillion won into the Yongin “Y2” fab and 19.1 trillion won into the Cheongju “M17” fab. The investment is part of the company’s mid-to-long-term production expansion strategy for both DRAM and NAND memory.
The outlets also report the schedule for the facilities’ cleanroom openings: the Y2 site is expected to open its cleanroom in June 2029, while the M17 site is expected to open in December 2028. The investment aligns with South Korea’s broader industrial policy efforts, including a “tripolar mega project” initiative to strengthen advanced technologies across different regions. SK hynix has previously indicated larger long-term spending plans for the Yongin cluster and Cheongju.
