The Senate says the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will not be part of the new state police system. The explanation is that Abuja does not have the constitutional structures needed to operate its own police force under the same model planned for Nigeria’s states.
In statements reported by outlets, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity chairman Yemi Adaramodu says the FCT is directly controlled by the Federal Government. He points out that the territory does not have a governor or a state House of Assembly, and that a minister manages the FCT while following instructions from the Federal Executive Council. He also says legislative responsibilities for the FCT fall to the National Assembly.
The outlets frame the Senate’s position as part of broader discussion around the federal government’s state police plans. They note that the Federal Government continues preparations for the system, with reporting that President Bola Tinubu is likely to receive a draft Executive National Policing Bill on September 3.
