President Donald Trump says U.S. and Nigerian forces kill a senior leader of the Islamic State group during a joint operation in Nigeria. Multiple outlets report Trump made the announcement late Friday, saying the target was Abu Bakr al-Mainuki, described as ISIS’s second-in-command globally, and that he was killed in a coordinated strike with Nigerian armed forces. One report says the operation targeted a compound in the Lake Chad Basin, where Trump and a quoted U.S. official describe the group’s efforts to organize and finance, and to plan attacks against the United States and its interests. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is reported as confirming the operation and saying al-Mainuki was killed along with several of his lieutenants. Other coverage notes that the U.S. airstrikes were carried out in coordination with Nigerian forces and that the action follows Trump’s earlier public claims of a joint operation. The accounts emphasize that the announcement is based on Trump’s statements and related confirmations from Nigerian leadership, with details limited by the information provided publicly.
