The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) orders the identification, arrest and prosecution of an Air Peace staff member accused of blocking the runway at Lagos airport during a union picketing. The allegation follows claims that a driver drove a bus onto the runway and left it there, prompting airport authorities to intervene.
The protest is described as being carried out by multiple aviation unions and labour groups during Tuesday’s picketing. The unions accuse some domestic airlines of failing to remit a mandatory five per cent Ticket Sales Charge and of discouraging workers from joining trade unions. According to NCAA, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) tows the vehicle to restore movement, and the NCAA says it will investigate and apply sanctions.
Air Peace denies the allegation. Its spokesperson disputes that the vehicle blocked the runway and challenges critics to provide evidence, while NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu says the driver will face sanctions. The dispute reflects broader tensions involving union activity, regulatory compliance, and how airport disruptions are handled.
