Google is testing AMIE, a research medical AI system, for real-time clinical video consultations. In a first-of-its-kind study, AMIE (Video) runs synchronous video visits and receives clinical evaluator ratings based on multiple measures.
Across the reports, the testing uses trained professional patient actors rather than real patients. Fifteen actors portray a range of conditions, including cardiopulmonary, abdominal, HEENT, neurological or psychiatric, and musculoskeletal presentations. Google says the system’s ratings are on par with those given to primary care physicians on several core criteria.
The outlets differ mainly in framing. One report emphasizes the clinical-evaluation outcomes and describes the actor-based simulated environment in more detail. Another highlights the demonstration of real-time video consultation capability and labels it as an early, simulated study. Both characterize the work as a research test of how AMIE performs during live video interactions, pending further validation with real patient data.
