An XRP bridge connecting the XRP Ledger with the “tx” blockchain is halted after an attacker drains roughly $200,000 in XRP from the bridge’s reserve wallet. Multiple reports say the exploit happens when software treats unbacked or counterfeit XRP deposits as legitimate, allowing the attacker to exchange them for real XRP held in reserve.
The incident occurs on August 9. One outlet reports the bridge’s reserve is depleted in about 97 minutes, with losses described as more than 196,000 XRP (about $200,000). The operator patches the affected code, and the service is shut down. The operator also engages blockchain forensics experts and files a complaint or report with the FBI.
Outlets differ mainly in emphasis: one focuses on the software mistake—fake deposits being accepted as real—while another highlights the amount lost and the rapid timeline before the service is stopped. Both describe an attacker creating fake deposits on another blockchain, then using the bridge to extract value from the reserve wallet.
