The Nigeria Police Force issues a directive ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election barring politicians and VIPs from bringing armed escorts, security aides, or other unauthorised persons to polling units and collation centres.
Police spokesperson CSP Ani Iniedu says the measure is part of security arrangements ordered by Inspector-General of Police IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu to support a peaceful and credible vote. Nigerian Eye and Daily Post Nigeria both report that DIG Ishyaku Mohammed is deployed to coordinate security operations in Osun, supported by additional senior police officers across the state’s senatorial districts.
The police also state that security coverage is intended to protect voters, INEC officials, election observers, and media practitioners. They warn that offences such as ballot snatching, voter intimidation, and political thuggery will result in arrest and prosecution. Both outlets add that state security outfits, quasi-security groups, and private security organisations are barred from election duties, with the police emphasizing neutrality, professionalism, and respect for human rights.
