Karnataka is introducing a new Alcohol-in-Beverage (AIB)-based excise duty structure for alcoholic beverages and revising liquor rates across the state. Multiple outlets report that the new system takes effect on May 11, 2026. The State Excise Department describes the move as a first in India and as an effort to rationalise liquor pricing by shifting away from the earlier bulk litre-based approach and instead basing duties on alcohol content. The government says it aims to align prices with neighbouring states and make alcoholic beverages available at cheaper rates for consumers.
While the policy is described as lowering overall prices, sources also note that the impact is mixed across product categories. The Hindu reports that some lower-end liquor categories become costlier, while certain premium labels become cheaper under the revised pricing. Coverage also indicates that the earlier government-administered price fixation is deregulated, and product placement within price slabs is adjusted under the new regime.
The changes are expected to affect how liquor and beer are priced in Bengaluru and across Karnataka as the new excise rules replace the previous tariff structure.
