A Spanish F-18 fighter jet shoots down an unidentified drone in Romanian airspace after it breaches the country’s airspace, early Sunday morning, Aug. 16. Romanian defense authorities report the drone is intercepted over an unpopulated area in Galați County and that the aircraft is on combat patrol when the incident occurs.
The downing is described as the fourth drone incident in Romania this year, following earlier reports of Romanian F-16 jets intercepting drones that enter Romanian airspace. Multiple outlets link the pattern of incursions to the wider conflict involving neighboring Ukraine, where drones are frequently used.
NATO officials characterize the repeated airspace violations as dangerous and unacceptable. Other reported recent incidents in the region include discovery of drone fragments near the Ukrainian border and on Black Sea beaches on Aug. 14, as well as the destruction of Russian Gerbera drones near offshore gas facilities on Aug. 11, reflecting continuing security concerns and close allied monitoring.
