YouTube is changing how it counts video views. Starting August 24, the platform will count a view as soon as a video starts to play, rather than waiting for a later point in playback.
The move aligns YouTube’s main video view-counting method with the approach it already uses for Shorts and with similar systems used by Instagram and TikTok. Both outlets report that the change is expected to make total view counts rise more quickly for creators going forward.
TechCrunch notes the timing: it follows YouTube’s earlier decision, made about a year ago, to apply this “start playing” view-counting approach to Shorts. The Verge similarly frames the update as a method change that affects reported metrics, without indicating any change to how viewers watch the videos.
