Like the iPhone 17 Pro models, the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have three rear cameras – a 48MP Fusion Main lens, an 8x48MP Telephoto lens, and a 48MP Ultra Wide lens. They also share the same focal lengths and resolutions as their predecessors. The big upgrade this year though is the new variable aperture on the Main camera. Let's dive in. Aperture is what controls how much light enters the lens and hits the sensor. If too little light hits that sensor, images tend to be blurry and/or grainy. To compensate, the shutter has to stay open longer, or it has to turn on Night Mode. The problem with this approach is that the longer the shutter stays open or Night Mode is engaged, the more likely that the imagery will be blurry. Even still photos can lack sharpness and definition. The solution is to use a variable aperture lens that is physically able to let more or less light in depending on the shot, which in turn allows for variations in shutter speed. The iPhone 18 Pro models can do this automatically, or you can take over the process manually for more stylistic control. To achieve this, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max trade a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture for a four-stop variable aperture ranging from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4.0, delivering around 50 percent better low-light performance and giving photographers optical control over depth of field that the iPhone has never offered before. As mentioned, you can leave the iPhone 18 Pro to do its thing with the new variable aperture, or you can take control of it manually. Here's how it's done: In the Camera app, tap the button with six dots at the bottom-right of the interface. Select Lens Aperture from the control pane. Tap one of the four circles to set the aperture: from left to right they range ƒ/1.48, ƒ1.8, ƒ2.8, and finally, ƒ/4.0. If you change your mind, tap the Auto button on the left to let the iPhone automatically control the aperture. Try experimenting with different aperture settings to see how they affect your images. The ƒ/1.48, for example, produces a more shallow depth of field, while the ƒ/4.0 will have more of the image in focus. Just remember that with a variable aperture, the lower the f-number, the wider the aperture and the more light reaches the sensor. That allows the camera to use a faster shutter speed in the same lighting conditions, while also producing a shallower depth of field. By contrast, the higher the f-number, the smaller the aperture, letting in less light but increasing the amount of the scene that can remain in focus. Macworld Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. They retain the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screen sizes and aluminium unibody design introduced with the previous generation, but Apple has made substantial changes to the cameras, processor, cooling, battery life and connectivity. The biggest camera upgrade is a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, which can automatically move between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4 depending on lighting and depth of field. Apple says the widest aperture delivers around 50% better low-light performance, while new Pro controls add manual aperture, shutter speed, white balance and histogram controls. Inside is the A20 Pro, Apple’s first iPhone chip made using a 2nm process. It has a new six-core CPU, seven-core GPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine and 50% more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro. A larger vapor chamber and new M-series-inspired chip packaging also improve heat dissipation, with Apple claiming up to 40% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. Both Pro models also offer up to 8x optical-quality zoom from the Telephoto camera. Contrary to some earlier rumors, the variable-aperture camera is not exclusive to the Pro Max. Front camera Apple has retained the 18MP Center Stage front camera, rather than moving to the rumored 24MP sensor. It supports automatic reframing, Center Stage, ultra-stabilized video and Dual Capture. The front camera remains visibly associated with the Dynamic Island. Apple has not announced an under-display selfie camera on the iPhone 18 Pro. iPhone 18 Pro video changes Frame rates: Cinematic effects can now be applied after shooting to ordinary videos captured at up to 60fps. It is manufactured using a 2-nanometer process, down from the 3nm-class process used for A19 Pro, giving Apple more scope to improve efficiency and transistor density. One particularly important change is the packaging. Inspired by Apple’s M-series Mac chips, A20 Pro places the processor die side-by-side with memory rather than stacking memory directly in the chip’s thermal path. This improves heat transfer and allows the processor to couple more directly to the vapor chamber. That vapor chamber itself has three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro’s system. Apple claims the combination delivers up to 40% better sustained performance, which should be most noticeable during gaming, video work and intensive on-device AI rather than ordinary web browsing and messaging. RAM: How much memory does the iPhone 18 Pro/Max have? Apple does not officially publish RAM capacities for iPhones, and its launch material does not specify a RAM figure. Reports ahead of the event indicated 12GB of RAM, but importantly the iPhone 17 Pro was also widely reported to have 12GB. That means there may not be a capacity increase this generation. The more important confirmed improvement is 50% higher memory bandwidth, which allows the A20 Pro, GPU and Neural Engine to access data faster. That is particularly relevant to Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Larger on-device AI models demand not only sufficient RAM but very high memory bandwidth, so Apple’s chip and packaging changes should allow more complex models to run locally and for longer without the same thermal constraints. iPhone 18 Pro/Max connectivity options C2 modem One of the biggest changes is Apple’s C2 cellular modem, replacing the Qualcomm modem used in the previous Pro generation. Apple says C2 delivers: Faster upload performance than C1X 15% lower energy consumption AI-powered improvements to connection quality and reliability mmWave support in the U.S. This confirms a major rumor from before the launch. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Like the predecessors, the 2026 iPhones use Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip, supporting: Wi-Fi 7 Bluetooth 6 Thread Satellite Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages via satellite, Roadside Assistance via satellite and Find My satellite functionality continue. Battery life is one of the most significant improvements. Apple says eSIM-only models gain additional battery capacity because the space previously occupied by the physical SIM tray can be used for battery cells. Physical-SIM variants provide around two hours less video playback than equivalent eSIM-only models. The improvement comes from a combination of larger batteries, the more efficient 2nm A20 Pro processor and lower-power C2 modem. The $100 increase is considerably smaller than some analyst predictions before launch. Those forecasts had pointed to sharply higher DRAM and NAND costs caused by the global memory shortage, with estimates that the cost of 12GB of DRAM alone could rise dramatically this year. That makes component and memory pricing a credible contributor to Apple’s increase, although Apple itself hasn’t attributed the higher price to any one component. Should you buy the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max? Which model should you choose? Which one do you want?Apple The iPhone 18 Pro is a much stronger upgrade than the specifications initially suggest. The variable-aperture camera, A20 Pro, improved cooling, faster charging and better battery life all make meaningful differences, particularly for photography, gaming and intensive AI use. iPhone 17 Pro owners don’t need to rush to upgrade unless those features matter, but anyone coming from an iPhone 15 Pro or older will see a substantial jump. The 6.3-inch Pro is the better choice for most buyers because it has the same cameras and processor. Choose the Pro Max mainly if you want its larger display and class-leading 45-hour video battery life.

Apple has revealed at its "Surprise and Shine" event that both iPhone 18 Pro models will be equipped with a variable aperture camera. Prior to this announcement, some rumours suggested that only the iPhone 18 Pro Max would feature a variable aperture lens, but it seems that both models will benefit from the technology. Apple says it has developed a system of six laser-cut blades, each thinner than a human hair, to create the aperture lens. The blades are made of a specialized polymer composite for the right balance of mass flexibility and durability. The aperture adjusts automatically based on the scene. When you're in a darker environment, for example, the aperture opens to let in around 50% more light. It also allows you to capture cinematic mode effects from regular video after you capture, plus it now supports 60 frames per second for a half-speed effect.
