The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) says some fuel retailers are not reducing pump prices quickly enough after wholesale fuel costs fall. In an update on retailers’ pricing behaviour, the watchdog raises concerns about the pace at which lower wholesale prices are reflected for consumers.
The CMA focuses on what it describes as retailers using “passive pricing strategies.” It says these approaches are common among the majority of retailers it monitors, and that they can limit how quickly consumer-facing prices respond to changes in wholesale costs. The CMA’s assessment highlights potential competition concerns if retailers do not actively adjust pricing in step with underlying market movements.
While the update does not imply that retailers must pass through every wholesale change immediately, it signals regulatory scrutiny of how quickly price reductions occur. The different outlets reporting this emphasise the CMA’s concern about responsiveness and the general prevalence of passive strategies among retailers.
