Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani arrives in Islamabad for a two-day official visit, with Pakistan saying the trip is aimed at reviving bilateral engagement. The visit is scheduled for August 19-20 and is accompanied by a high-level delegation, according to the Foreign Office and reports from Syrian state-linked sources.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office says Shaibani is visiting at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and that talks will cover the full spectrum of bilateral relations, including ways to enhance cooperation and exchanges of views on regional and international developments. Dawn reports he is expected to meet Pakistan’s leadership, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and relevant ministers for defence and commerce.
Dawn also frames the visit as the first by a Syrian foreign minister since Walid al-Mouallem traveled to Pakistan in May 2007 and the first since the change of government in Damascus, following Bashar al-Assad’s overthrow in 2024. Middle East Eye similarly highlights that the arrival marks the first senior Syrian diplomatic visit to Pakistan in about 19 years.
