India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh says Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India to be “memorable,” and that Rahman would receive an appropriate and honorable reception. The envoy presents the engagement as a way to support people-to-people and business ties, stressing the value of trust and dialogue in managing bilateral differences.

The remarks come amid reported uncertainty over whether Rahman’s visit will take place for the BRICS summit scheduled for September 12–13, according to Free Press Journal. The outlet also notes fresh strains in India–Bangladesh ties. It reports that Bangladesh has demanded the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, while India says any request is being examined under applicable law and established procedures. In contrast, the Times of India focuses primarily on Modi’s desire for a meaningful reception and the goal of building on shared history and future prosperity.

Free Press Journal further says the envoy’s comments were made at a reception hosted by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka for Bangladeshi business leaders and a Confederation of Indian Industry delegation, and that the Indian side reiterates a cordial invitation for Rahman to visit.
