China’s Chang’e-7 mission is preparing to launch to the Moon’s south pole, where it will attempt what would be the first landing directly at the pole. The mission’s goal is to look for water ice in permanently shadowed or near-permanently dark regions, including dark craters that receive little or no sunlight.

Chang’e-7 is described as China’s seventh lunar mission and is planned to include an orbiter and a lander with a rover, as well as additional technology such as a “hopping” robot. Reporting also says the target area is Shackleton Crater, whose rim reaches close to the south pole, enabling the spacecraft to prospect for ice in nearby small depressions that stay extremely cold.
