Romanian fighter jets destroy an explosive-laden sea drone in the Black Sea near the Neptun Deep gas platform, a site under development. The incident occurs a few hundred metres from the platform after the drone is spotted by a commercial vessel around 6.30am local time. Two Romanian F-16s are dispatched to track and intercept the unmanned craft, which is then destroyed.
The Neptun Deep project is described as a major offshore gas development that is set to make Romania one of the largest gas producers in the European Union when it comes online. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen calls the incident part of an escalating campaign of threats and refers to “hybrid warfare.” Romanian President Nicuşor Dan also blames Russia, saying Romania remains vigilant alongside NATO partners.
Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruţă says he receives confirmation from Ukraine that the drone does not originate with Ukrainian forces. Miruţă adds that the decision to destroy the drone is taken to protect hundreds of workers on the platform and to secure critical infrastructure. One outlet also notes the timing relative to a prior Spanish jet intercept of a drone entering Romanian airspace earlier in the week and broader concerns about repeated unmanned incidents near Romania’s border with Ukraine.
