Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, says Nigeria would have been “overrun” by terrorists without what he describes as the Tinubu administration’s resolute security interventions. Bwala presents his claim as an assessment of how Nigeria’s inherited security challenges could have worsened into a wider crisis.

He says the threat is intensified by the spread of armed groups across the Sahel, arguing that this regional movement creates a spillover risk, especially through northern border areas. Bwala also cites ISIS and the Taliban as examples of the groups that operate in the wider Sahel region and says their presence increases pressure on Nigeria’s security architecture.

In explaining the government’s approach, he points to a combination of stronger domestic security operations, military action, and international cooperation. While he acknowledges insecurity remains serious in some local government areas, he argues the overall security environment has improved enough for government institutions to function more effectively in previously vulnerable areas. He further says the federal government cannot handle all security responsibilities alone and calls on state and local governments to do more to support security agencies and address threats within their jurisdictions.
