An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, Gurpreet Singh alias Gurpreet Gopi (45), is shot dead in Ferozepur district’s Mamdot. Police report that four armed assailants travel in a car and open fire on him in the main bazaar area, following an earlier chase.

According to reports, the attack takes place on Saturday evening (August 29). NDTV describes the victim’s motorcycle being chased before he is shot, while the Hindu and Free Press Journal say the assailants get down from their vehicle in the bazaar and fire towards the vehicle he is travelling in. Free Press Journal also says another person, Harpreet alias Happy (22), is injured and is taken to hospital in Ludhiana.

Police across outlets attribute the killing to a suspected election-related dispute. NDTV and Free Press Journal mention officers suspect an old or personal enmity linked to recent municipal council elections. Free Press Journal additionally reports that a newly appointed Mamdot Nagar Panchayat president linked to the AAP is believed to have been attacked separately but escapes unhurt, and that police identify the accused and send teams to arrest them.
