Google presents new plans to expand its search bar into an AI assistant that can take actions on a user’s behalf, such as booking restaurants, tracking news, and contacting businesses. The announcement comes as the company pushes further into “agentic” AI, aiming to move beyond answering individual queries toward longer, ongoing interactions. At its developer conference in Mountain View, CEO Sundar Pichai said Google’s Gemini AI app reaches about 900 million monthly users and its AI Mode search feature has about one billion monthly users worldwide. Google also introduces “Gemini Spark,” described as a personal AI agent for top-tier subscribers in the United States, launching next week. In addition, Google plans “always-on” AI agents in the United States this summer to alert users, complete tasks, and contact businesses.
Google says it is updating its models with Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default across Gemini and AI Mode, and expects a more capable Gemini 3.5 Pro next month. Google also announced collaboration with OpenAI to help curb fake or manipulated AI-generated images, using Google’s SynthID watermarking tool. The effort faces scrutiny over security, costs, and potential impacts on publishers and competition.
