Google and XREAL jointly unveil Project Aura, a new set of Android XR smart glasses, at Google I/O and related events. Multiple outlets describe Project Aura as an early Android XR hardware effort that pairs a built-in display system with additional hardware components. Tech reporting says the glasses use XREAL’s self-developed X1S chip and include XREAL’s X‑Prism optical system, which the company says has been independently developed and is mass-produced by XREAL.
Timing details differ slightly across coverage. Some reports characterize Project Aura as arriving for consumers in 2026, while another outlet cites that Google’s first Android XR display glasses are not expected until 2027—framing Project Aura as a key earlier device. One outlet also reports Google-linked information about how the experience is powered by using a wired battery arrangement as part of the device’s computing approach, along with a controller.
Separately, TechNode says nearly all Project Aura hardware R&D and manufacturing work is carried out by teams based in China. Another outlet adds that XREAL will provide an early-access program for developers ahead of the consumer launch.
