Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music file a lawsuit against Anthropic, alleging the AI company used copyrighted music and other works without permission to train its Claude models. The complaint names Anthropic and individual co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann as defendants. It seeks destruction of allegedly infringing copies and an account of Claude’s training data.
According to the allegations, Mann used BitTorrent to download many purportedly pirated books, and Anthropic employees allegedly downloaded additional books from the “Pirate Library Mirror.” The music-focused claims accuse the company of using copyrighted songs without authorization, including allegations of “torrenting, scraping, and downloading” materials for training.
