A rare working Apple I known as the “Hatfield” unit is scheduled for auction in October after going on public display in multiple U.S. cities. The machine is estimated to sell for about $500,000 to $800,000, with the auction house citing recent results for other operational Apple I systems.
The computer is one of fewer than 75 believed to exist and is identified as number 48 on the Apple-1 registry. It is in working condition and is signed by Steve Wozniak. Sources also say it comes with a letter written to Fred Hatfield and signed by Steve Jobs. Hatfield originally bought the unit from Apple in 1976, later selling it in 2013 for $40,000 after which a buyer restored it, obtained the Wozniak signatures, and sold it at auction for $671,400.
