Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado calls for a democratic transition after the interim government reaches a major oil agreement with the United States. In a video statement, she says Venezuela needs development that goes beyond financial inflows, arguing that reconstruction in the country depends on political change.
Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, links the need for “solid institutions” to a government chosen through popular vote. She describes the oil sector as only one part of Venezuela’s broader reconstruction effort, and says the country requires large investments but also “much more than money.” She also points out that the United States and the interim leadership promote the pact while sidelining near-term elections.
