Atiku’s camp criticizes Nasir El-Rufai’s 200 days in ICPC custody

The camp of African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has strongly criticized the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who has now spent 200 days in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, described El-Rufai as a “political prisoner,” insisting that he is entitled to justice, due process, and equal treatment under the law. He alleged that El-Rufai’s detention is politically motivated, pointing out that opposition figures face harsher treatment compared to ruling party members.Ibe contrasted El-Rufai’s situation with that of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who despite facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), remains politically active and has secured a senatorial ticket under the All Progressives Congress (APC).He accused state institutions of being weaponized against opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that such actions threaten Nigeria’s democracy.“If the APC believes Nigerians love its record of hunger, inflation, high fuel and electricity prices, high cost of living and crushing poverty, let it campaign on that record. The opposition should be defeated by voters not detained, intimidated or buried under endless litigation,” Ibe stated.He cautioned that using state power to silence opposition undermines free and competitive elections, stressing that today it is El-Rufai, but tomorrow it could be anyone.
