China and Russia issue a joint statement at a summit in Beijing criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system and Washington’s nuclear policy. The statement, released after Chinese President Xi Jinping meets Russian President Vladimir Putin, argues that ground- and space-based missile interceptors could undermine global strategic stability. It also criticises the U.S. for allowing a treaty limiting U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals to lapse in February. The leaders say Moscow had proposed extending the treaty, but Trump does not respond to that request.
While Xi seeks stable, constructive relations with the United States, the statement says China’s position aligns with Russia’s on key security issues. During the talks, Xi and Putin reaffirm their close ties, referring to the 2022 strategic partnership and describing cooperation as politically grounded and strategically coordinated.
On energy, both sides discuss expanding gas supplies from Russia to China, but they do not reach a major new agreement. The Kremlin says the parties reach a “general understanding” on parameters for a proposed pipeline project, while China provides limited public detail. Negotiations on pricing and the project timeline remain unresolved, with further talks expected.
