Iran jails a former men’s national football goalkeeper after he allegedly published a social media post highly critical of then–Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to his wife and Iranian state-linked reporting. Al-Monitor and Nigeria’s Vanguard both report that Mohammad Rashid Mazaheri, a former national team goalkeeper, is detained following the publication of the anti-Khamenei post earlier this year. In addition, Iran’s judiciary-linked Mizan news agency confirms that Mazaheri is under arrest. Mizan also states that he is detained after seeking to illegally cross the border, providing a separate basis for his detention beyond the social media allegations. The two reports do not offer additional details about the legal charges, the timing of his arrest beyond “earlier this year” for the post, or the outcome of any court proceedings.
