The Green Party’s candidate for the Makerfield by-election, Chris Kennedy, withdraws from the race less than 12 hours after being announced. The party says Kennedy stood down for “personal and family reasons” and apologises for posts that caused offence. Multiple outlets report that Kennedy had shared social media content about an arson attack on Jewish ambulances in Golders Green, north London. The reports include allegations that he described the attack as a “false flag” and included imagery in which parts of the word “Jewish” were blacked out. Outlets also say he reposted material from an accounts described as “ethno-nationalist.”

According to the reports, the Green Party responds by stating the posts do not reflect the views of the party. Kennedy is said to have deleted the posts and apologised for the offence caused. The party then reopens nominations to select a replacement candidate ahead of the by-election on 18 June, following Kennedy’s withdrawal later Thursday.
