Enugu receives 112 returnees from South Africa amid renewed xenophobic attacks

Enugu State Governor, Barr. Peter Mbah, has received 77 families, totaling 112 indigenes, who returned from South Africa following renewed xenophobic violence against black African migrants.The returnees were welcomed on Thursday at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, where the governor, represented by Secretary to the State Government Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, assured them of full support as they reintegrate into society.Mbah revealed that the state is working with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) to profile an additional 42 families expected to arrive soon. He condemned the attacks, acknowledging that many returnees lost businesses, properties, and years of investment due to the forced migration.To aid resettlement, the government announced a ₦1 million support fund for each of the 77 families. Mbah emphasized that the gesture was not compensation but a seed fund to help them rebuild their lives.He encouraged the returnees to harness the skills, knowledge, and networks acquired in South Africa to explore opportunities in Enugu, noting his administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for living, working, and investing.Chairman of the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Igwe Samuel Ikechukwu Asadu, also urged the returnees to embrace new opportunities and rebuild their lives in the state.
