Venezuela restores access to some news websites that have been blocked for years. The telecom regulator says 17 news sites are now reachable through multiple internet providers, a change verified by the digital rights group VE Sin Filtro.
Activists and rights monitors describe the move as partial. France 24 reports that broader censorship remains in place: at least 188 websites continue to be blocked, including 79 news outlets. Deutsche Welle similarly says the restoration covers only some portals, while “dozens” more news sites remain inaccessible.
The timing also links to ongoing political developments. France 24 says the unblock comes as US-backed political transition talks are set to resume, while Deutsche Welle frames the action primarily as a response to long-running censorship under President Nicolas Maduro’s administration. Both outlets agree the unblocking affects a limited number of sites rather than a full removal of restrictions.
