Employers in India are hiring more workers from tier II and III cities, with many reporting sharp increases over the past two years. A survey highlighted that 69% of organisations have increased hiring from these locations by more than 30% during that period, signalling a shift away from relying primarily on major metropolitan centres.

The report, based on responses from 1,729 employers across multiple sectors, also finds that the trend is expected to continue. About 55% of respondents expect most hiring to shift toward tier II and III cities over the next three years. Respondents cite cost efficiency as a key advantage (39%), along with stronger employee loyalty (26%) and lower attrition (22%). Some also point to access to untapped talent (13%).

Both outlets link the shift to broader talent-strategy changes rather than short-term substitution for metros. They also note constraints: 60% of respondents identify infrastructure and connectivity as major challenges to expanding hiring beyond metro areas. In terms of sector impact, manufacturing and engineering are seen as likely leading hiring demand, with 37% of respondents expecting these sectors to drive the highest demand in smaller cities over the next two to three years.
