McDonald’s is using an AI pricing engine to generate “optimal price” recommendations for each of its nearly 14,000 restaurants, Reuters reports. The system uses machine-learning algorithms that analyze data from millions of daily transactions and other inputs to set location-specific prices for menu items in the U.S. and some international markets.
According to Reuters, franchisees can access an interface showing guidance based partly on estimated “customer willingness to pay” in each restaurant’s area. Reuters says the engine widens price differences for the same product between restaurants, including between nearby neighborhoods and within the same broader area. It also reportedly incorporates publicly available competitor pricing information from online menus, though Reuters reports rival chains say they do not use AI in pricing.
Outlets describe the effort in the context of McDonald’s broader push to boost profits and regain market share, while also noting potential tensions. Multiple sources cite that franchisees feel pressure to follow recommendations, and that McDonald’s acknowledges possible regulatory and antitrust concerns. McDonald’s disputes Reuters’ characterization, saying the tool provides recommendations rather than mandates, and it has been using some form of the technology since at least 2019.
