DoorDash unveils an AI agent that lets customers order food by texting inside Apple’s Messages app. The company opens a waitlist for U.S. users to pilot the feature, positioning it as part of a broader push to integrate AI assistance into consumer messaging experiences.
According to multiple outlets, the phone-number conversation is linked to a DoorDash account, allowing the assistant to draw on prior purchases and saved preferences. It can build an order, use a saved payment method at checkout, and support interactive chat features such as viewing food photos and using images to suggest recipes or identify missing ingredients.
The reporting also highlights differences in emphasis across outlets: Bloomberg and MacRumors describe it as a limited pilot for select accounts and note that the AI can make mistakes, advising users to check their carts. TechCrunch frames the move as competitive strategy against rivals Uber Eats and Grubhub. The Next Web adds that testing found price differences versus the DoorDash app, describing this as a potential consumer-law issue in Europe while treating it as more likely a pricing discrepancy than an obvious technical failure.
