Tesla is expanding its Powershare Home Backup feature so that some Model 3 and Model Y vehicles can send power back to a home during a power outage. The change follows earlier availability on Tesla’s Cybertruck, which was the only Tesla volume vehicle capable of the function.
The feature works through Tesla’s home batteries and requires a Powerwall 3. Tesla also appears to limit eligibility based on when a car is ordered, with support being guaranteed only for vehicles ordered since October 1. The Verge adds that availability may not extend to all Powerwall versions, noting that Powerwall 2 is not covered in the same way.
Both outlets describe this as an expansion of a capability that had been limited inside Tesla’s lineup. They also place it in broader context: other automakers and EVs have offered home-backup functionality for some time, though the specific requirements and compatibility can differ across brands.
