The Bombay High Court fines a government employee Rs 10,000 after he is caught recording court proceedings on his mobile phone. The reports say the judges spotted him sitting in the courtroom with the phone’s flash on and initiated a suo motu contempt of court action.

According to the court order, the bench notes that court hearings are open to the public, but attendees must follow courtroom rules. The employee, Vilas Shamrao Wagh, reportedly tells the court he was present to meet a government pleader and that he had no case before the court. The court records that when he is noticed, he attempts to delete the video, but the IT department recovers the recording from deleted items.

Outlets also report that the court accepts his apology and does not proceed further under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971. Separately, the judges note he incorrectly identified himself during the incident and direct him to submit an affidavit with an unconditional apology by a set deadline.
