A lawmaker says a Unification Church-linked foundation tried to sell property and other assets worth 52.3 billion won (about $39 million) while it is facing an investigation tied to corruption allegations involving former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The Foundation for the Support of HSA-UWC reportedly filed two applications with South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism—one in December and another in March—to dispose of land and buildings. Both requests are said to have been rejected. The ministry’s reported reason, as cited by the lawmaker, is that the foundation did not provide sufficient justification for selling high-value assets without a specific plan for how the proceeds or replacement assets would be used, particularly while the foundation and its affiliates are under investigation by a special counsel and police.
The outlets’ coverage focuses on the same sequence—asset disposal applications, the approval requirement for nonprofit foundations, and the ministry’s rejection during an active probe. Differences are mainly in wording and emphasis rather than in the underlying facts described.
