The BBC is running a competitive tender for a “Doctor Who” reboot, and multiple producers have submitted pitches to lead the next chapter of the long-running sci-fi series. Several outlets report that Jed Mercurio, best known for “Line of Duty” and “Bodyguard,” is among the leading contenders, submitting his interest through Hat Trick Mercurio, his company co-founded with Jimmy Mulville.
Variety and Deadline say Mercurio’s pitch is part of a bake-off-style process in which hopeful producers present plans for how the series should be regenerated. Deadline also notes that STV Studios is preparing a separate proposal involving production plans that would see “TARDIS” elements transported to Scotland. Other reporting characterises the process as the BBC being open to incoming ideas as it considers the franchise’s future, with the outcome still pending.
