Formula One team Williams is involved in a High Court dispute after a historic FW23 racing car loaned to a garage business allegedly disappears. Williams says the car—worth about £750,000 and one of only nine FW23s built—was lent in 2015 to Autotech Performance Ltd, based in Telford, to be used as a showpiece.

Williams says it asks for the car back in 2021, but it is not returned. It also says Autotech went into liquidation and was dissolved, and the company’s former director and shareholder, Peter Thorpe, is now being sued for return of the vehicle or payment of more than £1 million. Williams’ legal case argues Thorpe wrongly told liquidators he owned the car personally and that the vehicle was removed from the premises without agreement.

Thorpe disputes the claims. He says he does not know where the car is and denies telling anyone he owned it, citing memory issues after a stroke. He also argues the FW23’s value is overstated, and that it may have been a show car without an engine. The case has been filed at the High Court but has not yet reached a full trial, according to reporting.
