Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating an alleged synthetic milk adulteration network after laboratory tests detected detergent in milk samples collected in Manchar, Pune district. Reports say all six samples tested were positive for detergent, raising concerns that non-food chemicals are being used to alter milk composition.

Outlets describe earlier and expanded enforcement actions linked to the same probe. In July, the FDA and Pune Rural Police conducted raids across multiple districts, seized materials and assets worth about Rs 11.48 crore, and destroyed nearly 20,000 litres of suspected synthetic milk. The subsequent investigation added findings that the adulteration involved multiple substances, including skimmed milk powder, whey powders, edible oil, emulsifiers and detergents, and further identified an industrial surfactant, nonylphenol ethoxylate, in the Manchar samples.

Times of India and other reports also point to cases involving the Sonai Dairy supply chain and additional enforcement steps, including intensified surveillance at milk collection and processing units. Investigators report FIRs being registered across locations and ongoing identification and arrest of accused individuals as the network is traced.
