Guyana announces and performs a major healthcare milestone as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations. President Dr. Irfaan Ali says the country conducts the world’s longest-distance telesurgery/robotic cardiac procedure, using advanced robotic technology and a surgeon based in India. According to reports, the system uses SSI Mantra robotic technology—described as the SSI Mantra 3 or Mantra Freedom 60—allowing robotic cardiac surgery to be guided remotely. The procedure takes place on Tuesday, with the operations conducted from Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in Georgetown. The President also states that the achievement is intended to position Guyana as a regional leader in cutting-edge medical care. He says an agreement has been reached to establish an international training hub in Guyana focused on robotic surgery for regional surgeons, building on the telesurgery breakthrough. The announcement is linked to themes of innovation and technological advancement as Guyana marks 60 years of independence. Across sources, the focus remains on the successful long-distance robotic cardiac surgery, the use of SSI Mantra robotic systems, and plans for regional training following the milestone.
