The Bombay High Court pulls up the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over Mumbai’s waste management, saying cleanliness in parts of south Mumbai does not mean the city is clean overall. The court’s remarks come during hearings on sanitation and garbage disposal problems, including concerns linked to landfill operations at Kanjurmarg and dumping of waste on streets and beaches.

The judges say they are concerned about residents’ health, hygiene and living conditions across all wards, not only in select areas such as Worli, Nariman Point or South Bombay. BMC officials respond that the civic body monitors cleanliness citywide and cites steps taken to address waste and pollution.

Outlets also report the court widening the petition’s scope to include health and hygiene monitoring across wards. The court further references the timing around Oct 2, when Gandhi Jayanti is observed and a cleanliness drive (Swachhata Abhiyan) is expected to be relevant, asking what more effective measures BMC has taken in line with the broader cleanliness initiative.
