American Airlines says it will install SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service for in-flight Wi‑Fi on more than 500 Airbus aircraft. Multiple outlets report that the rollout begins in the first quarter of 2027 and targets American’s narrowbody fleet, rather than the airline’s full aircraft lineup. Bloomberg and other sources describe the change as part of a broader industry race among U.S. carriers to offer faster, more reliable onboard connectivity to premium passengers.

Several reports specify that the deployment will include Airbus models such as the A321XLR and A321neo. Starlink is expected to join other in-flight connectivity providers already used by American, with sources noting that it will be implemented alongside incumbent systems from companies including Viasat and SES (formerly known as SES).

The announcements are also framed as a business win for SpaceX as it expands airline customers, following prior deals with other carriers. While coverage is generally consistent on the aircraft count, timing, and involvement of Airbus planes, some outlets note that only part of American’s fleet will receive Starlink under the initial plan.
