Mumbai police detain around 600 people across the city on Saturday ahead of a planned demonstration at August Kranti Maidan supporting an agitation by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in Delhi. Activist Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, is among those taken into custody before the protest, along with other prominent figures including his daughter Kasturi Gandhi and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Varun Sardesai, according to multiple reports.

Sources say Gandhi is held for roughly hours and is shifted between police stations before being released later in the day. The authorities cite concerns about maintaining law and order and also state the planned gathering at August Kranti Maidan is not a designated protest site, referencing a Bombay High Court order. Times of India and others report that the rally lacks the necessary permits.

Several outlets also describe police actions at or near Nana Chowk, including detentions of protesters in that area and an effort to prevent demonstrations. Police say legal steps are under way and released detainees later, with further proceedings ongoing where applicable.
